The History of the Legacy Sports Complex
The Legacy Sports Complex is a state-of-the-art facility that was built in 2006. It is located in the heart of downtown Houston and is home to the Houston Astros, the Houston Dynamo, and the Houston Dash. The complex was designed by HOK, a world-renowned architectural firm, and cost $291 million to build.
The original owner of the Legacy Sports Complex was Houston businessman John McMullen. He owned the Astros from 1979 until his death in 1992. The team was then inherited by his widow, Dr. Joan B. Tisch. In 1993, she sold the team to media mogul Dr. Robert Lynch for $115 million. Lynch owned the team until 2011, when he sold it to current owner Jim Crane for $610 million.
The Dynamo were founded in 2005 and began play in 2006. They are currently owned by AEG, one of the largest sports and entertainment companies in the world. The Dash began play in 2014 as an expansion team of the National Women’s Soccer League. They are currently owned by Gabriel Brener, who also has a minority ownership stake in the Houston Dynamo.
