After a successful 15-year NFL career as a tight end, Tony Gonzalez plans to leave the league after the 2015 season and embark on a new career in Hollywood. Sources confirm that Gonzalez is in talks with Fox Sports as well as Hollywood agents to pursue a career in film.

Tony Gonzalez is an all-time great tight end in the NFL. His 13-year career includes four Pro Bowl appearances, two All-Pro honors and five seasons leading the league in receiving yards. However, it appears the nine-time Pro Bowl performer may be on a new career path. NFL insider Adam Schefter reported last night that Gonzalez was not expected to take the field for the New York Jets on Monday Night Football.

Shortly after being inducted into the Hall of Fame as an NFL player, Tony Gonzalez found a new career as an announcer, first at CBS and then at Fox Sports, where his position has improved significantly in recent years. But the former tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons is apparently ready to move on, as he is reportedly leaving Fox to pursue a career in film and television.

Tony Gonzalez has been an NFL analyst since he left the NFL after the 2013 season

Gonzalez, the 13th player in the 1997 NFL Draft, came from Cal-Berkeley, played his first 10 years with the Chiefs and finished his career with five seasons with the Falcons. In 270 regular season games, he caught 1,325 passes, the most receptions for a tight end in NFL history and the third-most receptions behind Jerry Rice and Larry Fitzgerald. His 15,127 receiving yards are the most for a tight end and sixth on the all-time list, while his 111 receiving touchdowns are the second most among tight ends behind Antonio Gates and eighth on the all-time list.

After retiring following the 2013 season, Gonzalez signed a contract with CBS Sports and worked three seasons as an analyst on the NFL Todaypregame show. Since 2017, he has worked as a studio analyst on Fox Sports TV’s Fox NFL Kickoff pregame show and has been instrumental in the Fox NFL Sunday high-profile show and Thursday Night Football coverage for the past two years.

As many members of the Fox NFL Sunday team age, including Jimmy Johnson, 78, and Terry Bradshaw, 72, and approach the end of their careers, Gonzalez, 45, seemed a natural fit for one of those roles.

But it looks like that won’t be the case now, as Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports reports that Gonzalez will be leaving Fox Sports to pursue a career in film and television.

As for who will replace Gonzalez at the Fox NFL Kickoff, Michael Vick and Emmanuel Acho are reportedly in talks. Mark Sanchez has also recently been hired by Fox Sports as an analyst and Charles Woodson, who is rumoured to be taking on a bigger role at the broadcaster in the future, is certainly also an option.

Although Gonzalez does not have much experience as an actor yet, it cannot be said that he started a new career without it. After a few small roles in the early to mid 2000s (including one in an episode of Arli$$), he had a cameo as Special Agent Tony Francis in NCIS from 2014 to 2016 and also appeared in xXx:. The return of Xander Cage with Vin Diesel in 2017.
