The Sixers’ $196 Million Commitment to Joel Embiid Could Be the First Domino to Fall in Daryl Morey’s Master Plan

The NBA playoffs are in full swing, and the Sixers are enjoying an impressive 18-4 record that has them one win away from the Eastern Conference Finals. While the team has been making a number of moves that complement this success, one that has flown relatively under the radar is the $196 million contract extension that Philadelphia gave to Joel Embiid this past July.

The Philadelphia 76ers are in the midst of a rebuild, but for a rebuilding team, they’re spending quite a bit of money. On Tuesday, the Sixers announced a four-year extension to their partnership with big man Joel Embiid, sending the former No. 1 pick to the Sixers for the next four seasons—and possibly beyond. In a move that could mean the future of the franchise hinges on the health of Embiid, the Sixers committed close to $200 million to him.

The NBA offseason is coming to a close, with the Sixers finalizing a deal to bring former Sixers center Jahlil Okafor back to Philadelphia. Of course, the Sixers’ busy offseason included other noteworthy pieces of news, including their pursuit of Sixers legend, Dikembe Mutombo, and the hiring of Bryan Colangelo as their new general manager.. The Philadelphia 76ers have had a relatively uneventful offseason. There was a bit too much silence.

But that all changed on Tuesday, when the club and superstar center Joel Embiid agreed to a four-year, $196 million supermax contract. Philly has extended the dominating big man’s deal through 2027.

Now that Embiid has committed to the Sixers for the foreseeable future, it’s time for Daryl Morey, the team’s president of basketball operations, to make a franchise-altering move. The extension of Embiid’s deal may be the last piece in Morey’s grand summer strategy.

The Sixers spend a lot of money on Joel Embiid.

The uber-talented big has been the face of Philadelphia since the Sixers selected him in 2014. His enthusiastic demeanor and rags-to-riches tale perfectly encapsulate the city’s spirit, and he’s rapidly become the 2-1-5’s most popular athlete.

Any other uniform would be a crime if Embiid walked onto an NBA floor. He won’t be doing that anytime soon, thankfully for Sixers fans.

On Tuesday, Embiid agreed to a four-year, $196 million supermax contract that would keep him in Philadelphia until 2027. After formally putting pen to paper, he was just as ecstatic as the Philadelphia fans.

“PHILADELPHIA!!! There is no place like PHILADELPHIA!!! In an Instagram picture, he said, “Excited to keep working towards bringing a title home and ultimately retiring here #PHILLY.”

The 76ers can now concentrate on constructing a championship team around their franchise player now that he has been taken care of.

The first domino in Daryl Morey’s grand scheme has fallen.

Last season, the Sixers believed they had a championship-caliber squad. After a 49-23 regular season in which they beat off both the Brooklyn Nets and the Milwaukee Bucks for the Eastern Conference’s top seed, it certainly seemed that way.

However, a humiliating second-round playoff defeat to the Atlanta Hawks dashed their hopes of reaching the NBA Finals. It also served as a stark reminder that the roster as it is now isn’t capable of winning a championship. What’s the main cause behind this?

Ben Simmons is a well-known actor.

Embiid and Simmons have been teammates for five seasons and have yet to go beyond the second round of the playoffs. A 6-foot-10 point guard who can only score in the paint and doesn’t space the floor and a post-up center who thrives in one-on-one scenarios cannot coexist on the court. We believed they may be able to at first, but Simmons’ refusal to develop a jumper has rendered this difficult.

With the Sixers committed to Embiid for the next six years, it’s time to put together a cohesive squad that can spread the floor and feed him when he’s double-teamed.

It’s time for Morey to put his grand plan into action.

Now is the moment to make a deal for Damian Lillard.

How will the Sixers be able to wrest Damian Lillard from the Blazers?

The Sixers have shown interest in trading for Lillard this summer, but superstars of his level aren’t cheap. So, what kind of trade deal can the Philadelphia 76ers put together to persuade the Portland Trail Blazers to part ways with their franchise player?

Obviously, the trade would have to start with Simmons, not only because the Sixers need him out of town to maximize Embiid’s potential, but also because he’s the team’s only other All-Star and can still be a top-15 player in the NBA if he develops a jumper.

Following Simmons, the Sixers would very certainly have to include Tyrese Maxey, Matisse Thybulle, Isaiah Joe, and a slew of lottery choices. But wait, there’s more. If the Blazers need all of that in order to agree to a deal, you fire the trigger without hesitation.

A team headed by Embiid and Lillard would become one of the most feared in the NBA almost immediately. Since Embiid joined the club, Philadelphia has lacked a reliable scoring option at the guard position, and Lillard would be the ideal fit.

For years to come, the elements are in place for a genuine title contender. It’s now up to Morey to complete the puzzle.
