The New York Giants offensive line is so bad that there is talk of putting Joe Judge into the booth with the headset to give him offensive line advice. Coach Ben McAdoo is going to the extreme to fix the line. If that doesn’t work, he will try a different strategy, which is putting a fourth offensive lineman into the game.

For the New York Giants , offense is supposed to be easy. All the quarterback has to do is take a couple of steps and find a receiver open. But behind the line of scrimmage, things are a little different. The offensive line is a revolving door, a player’s job is the same one week to week. Meanwhile, the Giants take turns going to a coaching clinic to try and get a handle on what exactly is going wrong. So far, the coaching has been effective. In the last two games, both losses, the line has been much better. In the last two weeks, the Giants have scored 80 points, their best total in a two-week period in over a year. The Giants have been piling up points in a way

The New York Giants have made a habit of making terrible offensive line decisions. Last year, the Giants staff decided to start Justin Pugh over Ereck Flowers. The year before that, they started Will Beatty at left tackle over Ereck Flowers. The year before that, they were so convinced by what they saw in Will Beatty that they didn’t bother to bring Flowers in for a tryout. Last year, they signed Brandon Mosley to the active roster, and decided to start him over third-stringer Brett Jones.. Read more about giants head coach and let us know what you think.

The New York Giants started the 2020 season by dropping seven of their first eight games. In addition, the team’s best player, running back Saquon Barkley, suffered a season-ending knee injury. Quarterback Daniel Jones, head coach Joe Judge, and the rest of the team turned things around in the last weeks and ended strong, winning five of their final eight games. The team’s offensive line, on the other hand, ended as one of the worst in the NFL.

Much of the team’s — and Jones’ and Barkley’s — success in 2021 will be determined by how well the offensive line performs. While the majority of the cast returns from last season, Judge has hired four offensive line coaches who he believes will assist.

In 2020, the offensive line for the New York Giants was terrible.

During the 2020 season, the Giants’ offensive line didn’t exactly shine. The bunch sacked second-year quarterback Daniel Jones 45 times and did not assist any teammates in rushing for more than Wayne Galman’s 682 yards.

According to PFF, the line was the second-worst in the league at the end of the season. Ben Linsey wrote about the group in his “Final 2020 offensive line rankings”:

Given the season he had in comparison to the tackles chosen after him, the Giants can’t be happy with their choice to choose Andrew Thomas as the first tackle off the board in last year’s selection. … As you would expect from a club that ranks second to bottom on this list, Thomas wasn’t the Giants’ only offensive issue. At left guard, Shane Lemieux and Will Hernandez both allowed pressure rates of at least 8%, while Cameron Fleming, who was stepping in for the opted-out Nate Solder at right tackle, allowed the sixth highest pressures in the league.

In 2021, the majority of this off-key band reunited in New York. Thomas, Hernandez, and Lemieux remain on the line, while Solder has returned, although as a backup on the G-first Men’s preseason depth chart. Matt Peart will start at right tackle and Nick Gates will start at center.

How does Judge intend to get more mileage out of the line this year than he did in 2020? There will be a lot more coaches.

In 2021, Joe Judge will have four coaches working with the team.

There is usually an offensive line coach and one assistant on most NFL clubs. The Giants in 2021 will have four offensive line coaches, including Judge. That’s a 100 percent increase over the majority of other clubs’ offensive line coaches.

According to ESPN, the split is as follows. The offensive line coach is Rob Sale, a first-time NFL coach from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Ben Wilkerson, who has served as his assistant for the last three seasons, is his choice. Pat Flaherty, who was the Giants’ offensive line coach during the team’s most recent Super Bowl run, is also on the list (2004 to 2015). He’s a consultant, but he’s also coaching the offensive line throughout camp.

Last but not least, Freddie Kitchens, the former head coach of the Cleveland Browns, was promoted from tight ends coach to “senior offensive assistant working with the line, virtually as a run-game coach and assistant offensive coordinator under Jason Garrett.”

Judge appears pleased with the arrangement thus far, adding, “It’s really gone quite nicely.” “I believe all four of you guys do an excellent job.”

For Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley, this is a make-or-break season.

@PLeonardNYDN does an excellent job of breaking down the #NYG’s financial obligations for what seems to be a “all-in” 2021 season. (With big-money contracts looming for Saquon & Daniel Jones in the not-too-distant future.) https://t.co/KafI9qywOd

The ability of these four coaches to whip the five-plus offensive line into shape will be critical to the team’s success in 2021, as well as Jones and running back Saquon Barkley’s futures.

Barkley is in the last year of his rookie contract. His fifth-year option for 2022 was picked up by the club for $7.2 million, but he will be an unrestricted free agent after that. In order to earn a large contract in New Jersey, he’ll have to start demonstrating he still has his former explosiveness after significant knee surgery.

Jones is a year behind Barkley in terms of contract, but the team has yet to take up his fifth-year option for 2023. If the rookie quarterback spends another year fleeing for his life or flat on his back, the Giants will almost certainly select first overall again next year, and a new quarterback may be on the horizon.

The Giants want to have the proper (four!) coaches to help them improve the offensive line in 2021, which will have a big impact on Jones and Barkley’s future.
