The Buccaneers’ Desperate Attempt to Solidify Their Secondary Has Already Blown up in Their Faces

The Buccaneers have been in desperate need of a cornerback. They tried to address the position with their first draft pick, but it was not enough. After their second round selection, they took Florida State alum Isaiah Johnson-Mack who could face legal trouble for his off-field behavior if he cannot stay on the field.

The “espn podcasts” is a podcast that discusses the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers’ attempt to solidify their secondary has already blown up in their faces.

The 2021 season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers gets off to a rocky start. They’re performing well enough to keep their postseason hopes alive. However, after 10 weeks of activity, they’ve been decimated by the injury bug.

Antonio Brown and Rob Gronkowski, two key pass catchers, have missed numerous games, and their secondary is now in disarray. Carlton Davis and Sean Murphy-Bunting, the team’s regular starting cornerbacks, are both on injured reserve.

Due to the Buccaneers’ injury problems, they were forced to make a last-minute signing.

With the Buccaneers’ secondary suffering from so many injuries at the outset of the season, the front staff made a desperate choice to address the problem. On September 29, they signed veteran cornerback Richard Sherman and swiftly incorporated him into the starting defense.

Sherman turned 33 in March, missed a number of games in 2020 due to injury, and had a legal situation throughout the summer. These issues prevented other clubs from signing him until the Buccaneers ran out of CB depth.

Prior to Week 10, Sherman was in and out of the Buccaneers’ lineup due to lingering ailments. He only appeared in three games for Tampa Bay. Sherman’s Buccaneers career looks to be coming to an end as a result of his current injury woes.

During warmups for the Buccaneers’ Week 10 game against the Washington Redskins, Sherman sustained a calf injury. The Buccaneers swiftly ruled out the veteran cornerback for Sunday’s game against the Redskins. The Football Team eventually won the game because to a good effort by quarterback Taylor Heinicke, which was aided by a severely weakened Tampa Bay defense.

Two days after the defeat, Sherman had an MRI, which indicated a Grade 2 calf injury. Sherman is expected to miss a considerable period of time in the future, according to Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians.

“I strongly doubt he’ll return any time soon,” Arians remarked.

Sherman’s age, along with his injury history, suggests he’ll be out for the rest of the season. Since joining the Bucs, he has had two lower-body injuries (pulled hamstring in Week 6). At this point in his career, it’s becoming evident that his body can’t keep up with the demands of the NFL.

The Buccaneers’ secondary depth is a significant issue.

The whole reason Tampa Bay signed Sherman in the first place was to provide the secondary some much-needed depth. When Davis and Murphy-Bunting went down, the Buccaneers’ defense began to struggle, highlighting the team’s lack of cornerback depth.

As a result of Sherman’s injury, Tampa Bay’s depth has been decimated. The Buccaneers are on the verge of being stuck with this problem going forward, with the trade deadline gone and little to no potential free agents left on the market.

Sure, they can sign a few of practice squad members. That won’t be enough to stay up with Green Bay, Dallas, and Los Angeles’ high-powered offenses. Sherman has to be a trustworthy option for the remainder of the season for the Buccaneers. His season, on the other hand, may be over.
