‘Takes a Piece of Paper and a Pen and Sticks It Up Underneath the Door’

It was the summer of 1974, and in just a few short months my life would change forever. My uncle had been drafted to play for the Dallas Cowboys that year, and I wanted nothing more than to go out with him on his first night back home after practice.

“Takes a Piece of Paper and a Pen and Sticks It Up Underneath the Door” is an expression that was coined by Michael Jordan. The phrase has been used to describe when someone does something in secret, or without anyone knowing about it.

Michael Jordan, the legendary Chicago Bulls basketball player, was possibly the most popular personality in the world throughout the 1990s. The shooting guard was so well-known that he couldn’t even fill up his vehicle without being mobbed by supporters.

Jordan couldn’t do typical activities with his family like go to the mall or see a movie because people would mob him and demand signatures and photos. It was also revealed that the six-time winner couldn’t even use the restroom alone.

In the airport washroom, a fan requested Michael Jordan for an autograph.

Jordan was once requested to sign an autograph while using the restroom at an airport, according to former Bulls big man Will Perdue. Perdue and his colleagues couldn’t believe it when a fan put a piece of paper and a pen under the lavatory stall and begged His Airness for his autograph.

“One of the funniest moments occurred when we were travelling someplace and when we arrived at our destination, we got off the aircraft. “As many guys know, the first thing you do when you get off the aircraft is rush to the restroom,” Perdue stated on the Bulls Talk Podcast in 2021. “Everyone is standing at the urinals when Michael comes in,” said the group (sighs). So he’ll have to use a stall, right? The door is shut. So, clearly, this person (fan) believes he’ll be in there for a long and gets a piece of paper and a pen and places it up below the door, saying, ‘Hey, dude, you’ll be in there for a while.’ ‘Could you please sign this?’ And now, of course, we’re all sitting there with our backs against the wall. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” we say.

Jordan was a larger-than-life figure in the 1990s, as this tale from Perdue illustrates. The All-Star couldn’t even use the restroom without being approached for an autograph, which is why MJ stated that being him isn’t pleasant.

“I don’t believe people realize it’s no fun,” Michael Jordan says of his celebrity.

In the first episode of ESPN’s The Last Dance docuseries, the MVP speaks about his life not being as pleasant as everyone thinks it is in an old Jordan ad. Being Superman would be a nightmare if you cherish your privacy.

“It’s interesting, a lot of people say they’d want to be Michael Jordan for a day or a week,” Jordan said in the ad. “But let them try to be Michael Jordan for a year and see if they enjoy it.” “I don’t believe you can witness Michael Jordan in his full form for only one day.” “I don’t believe they realize it’s not enjoyable.”

Jordan only had peace and quiet when he was at home with his family or in a hotel room when on the road. Apart from those two sites, the six-time Finals MVP was under constant pressure to interact with fans, as Bulls senior director of public and media relations Tim Hallam saw firsthand in the 1990s.

“I wouldn’t want to be like Mike,” Tim Hallam says. It’s a near-impossible mission.”

Almost everyone aspired to be like Jordan, which is why Gatorade created the “Be like Mike” campaign. Hallam, on the other hand, was one of the few individuals who understood that becoming Air Jordan was a “impossible undertaking.”

“I believe what people don’t know is that the focus is on Michael Jordan from the time he leaves his hotel room,” Hallam stated in The Last Dance. “Everyone in the globe wanted to meet him or speak with him.” In some way or another, they all wanted a piece of him. He felt compelled to be available to people at all times. Mike isn’t someone I’d want to be like. It’s a near-impossible mission.”

Jordan was compelled to do a lot of strange things throughout his playing career, from signing autographs in restrooms to donning disguises at malls. It’s really incredible how he handled his celebrity so well and never got into legal problems despite being the finest basketball player on the planet.
