Southern Hills Country Club Ended the Greatest Run of Tiger Woods’ Career

Tiger Woods’ career-long dominance ended in controversial fashion as he lost a playoff to eventual winner Kevin Na at the Southern Hills Country Club. To critics of Tiger, this was just another one of his many comebacks that failed. But for those who still believe there is more left in the tank, it might be worth considering what could have been if not for an unlucky bounce on a spike from Kevin Na.

The “Southern Hills Country Club Membership Cost” is a golf club that Tiger Woods has been playing at for the past few years. The club ended the greatest run of his career.

Tiger Woods will very certainly never equal Jack Nicklaus’ 18 major titles. That’s just OK. However, it can equally be stated that Jack Nicklaus never accomplished what Tiger Woods achieved between June 2000 and April 2001.

Of course, we’re talking about Woods’ iconic “Tiger Slam,” in which he won all four major tournaments at the same time, a record that is unlikely to be repeated.

But do you remember when Woods’ illustrious run of major championship triumphs came to an end? That would be the 2001 US Open, held at Southern Hills Country Club, which will host the PGA Championship in 2022.

Prior to the 2001 U.S. Open at Southern Hills, Tiger Woods had won four consecutive majors and five of his past six events.

Woods was in the middle of his most dominant period of his brilliant career coming into the 2001 U.S. Open at Southern Hills.

He’d crushed the competition in the US Open at Pebble Beach a year before, winning by an incredible 15 shots. He won The Open Championship by eight strokes at St. Andrews a month later. A month later, he won the PGA Championship at Valhalla in a playoff against Bob May, a journeyman. With a two-shot victory at The Masters in 2001, Woods completed the “Tiger Slam.”

Woods’ victory at Augusta was part of a three-race winning streak in 2001. Tiger didn’t win any of his first six races in 2001, but he still managed four top-10 finishes and never finished worse than 13th.

Woods, on the other hand, won five of his next six outings leading up to Southern Hills. Tiger won The Players Championship with a second straight victory at Bay Hill. That was the week of his famous 17th-hole “better than most” putt. Then there came the Masters victory.

Woods returned to competition after a five-week layoff, finishing tied for third at the Byron Nelson. On the European Tour, he returned to the winner’s circle a week later at the Deutsche Bank TPC in Germany. He then won the Memorial for the third year in a row two weeks later.

So it’s fair to say Tiger was on a roll when he arrived at Southern Hills.

At the 2001 U.S. Open at Southern Hills, Tiger finished 12th.

Weather played a big role in the first several rounds of the 2001 US Open at Southern Hills, and it seemed to affect Tiger. Woods started his quest for a fifth consecutive major victory with a 4-over 74, eight strokes behind Retief Goosen.

Tiger scored 1-over 71 in the second round to make the weekend by a single stroke at 5-over. Only six players were under par at the conclusion of the third round, and only two more were even for the event. Woods was not one of them, despite playing a 1-under 69 in the third round.

Woods was nine strokes behind co-leaders Goosen and Stewart Cink heading into Sunday’s final round. While others went low, Tiger couldn’t reach the next level, shooting a second straight 69 to share for 12th place at 3-over for the week, seven strokes behind Goosen and Mark Brooks, who both ended at 4-under. Goosen won the 18-hole playoff the next day by two strokes.

Woods failed to truly compete in the final two majors of the 2001 season as well. He finished tied for 25th at The Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St. Anne’s and tied for 29th at the PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

Tiger returned to the majors after winning The Masters in 2002. He went on to win the US Open at Bethpage Black in 2002.

Woods went on to win his 13th major tournament at Southern Hills, a two-shot triumph in the 2007 PGA Championship.
