Russell Westbrook’s Contract Give the Lakers Another Headache Beyond His On-court Struggles

Russell Westbrook’s contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder wasn’t a good one for either party. The NBA All-Star signed a five year, $205 million dollar deal with his hometown team that includes an opt out clause after three years. However, it seems like the Lakers are already regretting their decision to make such a large financial commitment to him as he struggles on court and off due to chemistry issues among other factors most notably being lack of playing time in favor of LeBron James

The “russell westbrook lakers contract” is a topic that has been trending on the internet. Russell Westbrook’s contract gives the Lakers another headache beyond his on-court struggles.

Russell Westbrook's Contract Give the Lakers Another Headache Beyond His On-court Struggles

The Los Angeles Lakers are still stumbling their way through the 2021-22 season, striving to achieve some kind of continuity. The Lakers’ lack of success has led to speculation of a strong engagement in the trade market. Russell Westbrook might be pushing Los Angeles into a more tough roster situation.

The Lakers are still trying to find their feet.

It’s an understatement to say that the Lakers have had a difficult time finding a regular footing.

COVID and Injuries Los Angeles has split their first 44 games due to 19 unrelated concerns. The team has remained in the postseason race because to LeBron James’ outstanding performance in his 19th season.

Despite their strong victory against the Utah Jazz on Monday night, the Lakers are surrounded by trade rumors that might see them seek two potential backcourt targets.

Russell Westbrook’s deal gives the Lakers another worry, apart from his on-court troubles, as the NBA trade deadline approaches.

The Lakers’ persistent troubles have shifted the focus to the trade market as a means of getting the team back on track.

General manager Rob Pelinka, on the other hand, is hampered by the fact that nine-time All-Star Russell Westbrook isn’t attracting much attention because to his large remaining deal. This season, he earns $44.2 million and has a $47 million player option for the 2022-23 season.

As a result, the team’s most intriguing trade component is third-year guard Talen Horton-Tucker. According to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report, the Lakers may be pushed to pursue former Sixth Man of the Year Eric Gordon or Orlando Magic guard Terrance Ross.

“While the Los Angeles Lakers want Simmons, Turner, and Grant, they may not have enough money to make a trade. Pincus stated, ‘Westbrook’s contract is almost unmovable.’ “In his third season, Talen Horton-Tucker hasn’t progressed. Terrence Ross of the Orlando Magic or Eric Gordon of the Rockets, if either club willing to take a chance on Horton-Tucker as a potential, may be a better fit for the Lakers.”

Gordon has developed into an extremely productive scoring option off the bench over the previous several seasons. The 33-year-old is having a productive season, averaging 14.9 points on 50.5 percent shooting from the field and 45.5 percent from three-point range on 5.3 attempts per game. Gordon is in the second year of his four-year, $75.5 million contract, and is expected to earn about $18.2 million this season.

Meanwhile, because of his flexibility, Ross has been connected to the Lakers throughout the years. The 30-year-old is averaging 12.2 points per game while shooting 41.1 percent from the field and 31.4 percent from beyond the arc. He’s in the third year of his four-year, $54 million contract, and will earn $12.5 million in 2021-22.

Any deal for any of them would almost certainly need the Lakers to include a few additional players, beginning with Kendrick Nunn, who earns $5 million per year. The Lakers are allegedly trying to trade DeAndre Jordan and Kent Bazemore, both of whom are paid at the veteran’s minimum.

Regardless, it’s another option for the Lakers to consider.

With Russell Westbrook, the Lakers will have to go ahead.

As the trade deadline approaches, it’s evident that the Lakers will have to remain with Russell Westbrook.

Westbrook’s inconsistency, along with the size of his remaining deal, has rendered him almost unmovable. Along with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Los Angeles wants him to feel at ease and produce consistent scoring.

The Lakers signed Westbrook with the hopes that he would be the missing piece in their backcourt that would propel them into NBA championship contention. He’s had a hard time showcasing it, but he still has time to discover his rhythm and specialty.

Only time will tell if Westbrook can develop into the x-factor the Lakers need.
