Every day, Terez Paylor will help you navigate the Chiefs. She will explain why Alex Smith is leaving, why Patrick Mahomes is here, and why everything else around Kansas City is, well, moving along.
The Kansas City Chiefs are feeling a sense of urgency this week because of a decision to be made by general manager Brett Veach. With Patrick Mahomes set to enter the final year of his rookie contract, Veach must decide which quarterback he will retain for the 2018 season and beyond. That decision will likely come down to Mahomes or Chad Henne, who was acquired by the Chiefs at last year’s trade deadline.Although Patrick Mahomes has only known Teresa Paylor for a few years, the superstar quarterback clearly saw something special in the longtime Kansas City Chiefs star. Paylor, who was respected by his peers and by the players and coaches he followed, provided unique insight into the NFL for years before passing away suddenly in February.
His death robbed the world of a gifted journalist and dedicated family man. But if Paylor never publishes his story again, that doesn’t mean his memory fades. After expressing his sincere gratitude to the late Chiefs Reporter, Mahomes reminded everyone why Paylor’s legacy will live on forever.
Chiefs fans have been used to reading Paylor’s work since he began covering the team in 2013. An excellent journalist with a knack for connecting with audiences, he wrote about other aspects of the NFL while at Yahoo! Sports.
But just days after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Chiefs in Super Bowl 55, journalism, the NFL and the world suffered a tragic loss.
Paylor died suddenly on Tuesday, February 9, aged 37, at his home.
Members of the sports media, NFL players and coaches immediately took to social media to express their condolences.
Teresa’s genius had nothing to do with turning a phrase, wrote Kansas City Star columnist Sam Mellinger. He knew football and the people who loved it.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared a message from Paylor’s longtime girlfriend and fiancée, Ebony Reid, about the unexpected death of his fellow reporter.
While we are shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Teresa Paylor, we also celebrate her extraordinary life that touched so many, said a statement from Reed. Terez was an exceptional journalist whose passion for football made him a respected voice. His legacy will have an indelible impact on sports journalism, the NFL, the Kansas City Chiefs team and fans. Most importantly, Terez was a devoted son, grandson and brother, a beloved fiancé and a great friend to many. To know him is to love him. He will be sorely missed.
