Wash Away

Commander has a lot of methods to cast spells from places other than your hand, thus the new Wash Away counterspell is an immediate hit.

Of course, it’s not quite as good as Force of Negation, which can be cast for free, but spending one mana for a reliable counterspell is still a great value.

It can easily thwart any Underworld Breach antics, as well as exile zone and tutor schemes, early on. You won’t have to worry about it if you combine it with a couple other strong counterspells.

The Horror of Hullbreaker

If you’re searching for a card that can break a complete chain of your opponent’s moves, this is the one.

In Tasigur, the Golden Fang decks, the high cost of Hullbreaker Horror won’t matter much since you may use Neoform or similar spells to place Hullbreaker Horror on the board and activate its return abilities one after another with a sequence of cards.

Unless your opponent uses Veil of Summer, this creature can even target uncounterable spells.

Odric, the Blood-Blooded

For a long time, the EDH community has been buzzing about this card because it has an awesome infinite mana combination that goes like this:

  1. Eldrazi Displacer is a spell that may be used to displace Eldrazi.
  2. Krark-Clan Ironworks (Cast)
  3. Raptor Raptor Raptor Raptor Raptor Raptor Rap (or any other similar creature)
  4. Odric, Blood-Cursed is cast, and two blood tokens are created.
  5. Two blood tokens are sacrificed to Krark-Clan Ironworks, yielding 4 mana.
  6. On Odric, Blood-Cursed, use 3 mana for Eldrazi Displacer’s blink ability.
  7. Odric, Blood-Cursed, makes two additional blood tokens when he returns.
  8. Rinse and repeat steps 5-7 until you have an endless amount of mana.

Eruth, the afflicted Prophet

This card’s abilities and color scheme hint that it will be a major supporter of storm decks in commander.

It’s essentially a draw engine that creates twice as many cards every trigger, which can then be cast from the exile zone, which is a fantastic strategy for storm decks.

Even if it’s not your commander, but part of 99, spells like Brainstorm may greatly help this card soar. In any case, it doesn’t take long to set up and may be played as soon as turn three.

Unexpected Turn of Events

This effect isn’t brand new; Tolarian Winds and Collective Defiance are already in the format, but if you cast it after these spells, you may draw a lot more cards than usual.

Rielle, the Everwise, Bone Miser (or any other Shadow Bag strategy), Wheel of Fortune, and many more decks will benefit from it.

Retrieval of the Alchemist

This is another another powerful 1-mana blue spell that will find its way into commander decks this season.

Tide Consumption

Cyclonic Rift, a commander staple, is one of the few cards that may be compared to it. Another candidate comes from Innistrad Crimson Vow. It’s just a sorcery, not an instant, but it only costs four mana, compared to the many other comparable cards that cost far more.

Consuming Tide isn’t going to disrupt the format or anything, and many players will find sorcery speed ineffectual, but in decks like Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain, this might be a great way to draw extra cards with your free mana rocks.

Hellkite Manaform

We’ve seen a lot of token generators in the before, but Manaform Hellkite’s tokens have haste, which changes everything.

You may quickly combo off a succession of inexpensive spells to generate a large number of hasty attackers and win the game right away.

It might be a finisher in a commander partner deck with Krark, the Thumbless and Sakashima of a Thousand Faces. Sakashima could then replicate Manaform Hellkite, and Krark could create further spells for all of the tokens.

Illuminator of Cemeteries

The textbox on this card is a little inconsistent in terms of language, but it provides a lot of versatility.

Edgar, the Enchanted Groom

Because it makes tokens that trigger Welcoming Vampire’s ability when it transforms, the new vampire commander from Crimson Vow might also be a potential card draw generator for her.

Even if you play it as a basic vampire ruler, it’s useful since he can keep Welcoming Vampire out of the range of Lightning Bolt.

When you combine these two in a commander vampire tribal list, you’ll have a deck that’s ready to go.

The Corrosive Toxrill

Toxrill, the Corrosive is clearly a slow card, but its strong power makes you want to play it nonetheless. All you have to do now is figure out how to speed up the counter effect and token generation.

To raise the amount of counters, players will require a steady Porliferate engine, such as Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, or something similar. To double the speed later on, you may need to build a replica of Toxrill himself.

Toxrill is a good commander card regardless of your approach.

Colossus Cultivator

The Abundance enchantment from Urza’s Saga is the first thing that comes to mind while using Cultivator Colossus. In a single turn, Abundance may help you filter out all the lands and transform Cultivator Colossus into a monstrous monster.

For a comparable effect, use Scouting Trek to place all of your land cards on top of your library.

If you want things to be even hotter, throw in Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle for all that additional damage.

Geralf, the Imaginative Stitcher

If you think the zombies in your The Scarab God deck aren’t strong enough, you may use Geralf, Visionary Stitcher to grant them all Flying.

If The Scarab God is too pricey for you, you may replace him with Geralf, Visionary Stitcher as your commander and play a cheaper version of the zombies tribal deck.

Finally, you may use Geralf’s second ability to sacrifice Charix, the Raging Isle in exchange for a 17/17 flying zombie, which is scary and very certainly game-winning.


Necroduality will be a fantastic delight for Zombie Tribal gamers. It simply doubles the strength of their decks at no cost, and this is something that should never be overlooked.

However, there is a neat little infinite tokens combo associated with this enchantment:

  1. Phyrexian Altar is a spell that may be cast.
  2. Necroduality (Cast)
  3. Gravecrawler is summoned, and Necroduality is used to create a second duplicate.
  4. Gravecrawler may be sacrificed with Phyrexian Altar to generate one black mana.
  5. Cast Gravecrawler from your graveyard with this one black mana.
  6. Steps 3-5 may be repeated indefinitely for an endless supply of zombie tokens.
