Kyle Shanahan?s relationship with the Redskins front office and the Skins’ roster has been turbulent to say the least. But general manager Scot McCloughan?s hiring of Shanahan as head coach likely means Shanahan will have a clean slate with the Redskins. Depending on how well the Redskins draft this spring and summer, there are definitely ways the Redskins could address their roster needs this offseason.
There was a story in the New York Times yesterday about an interview Mike Florio gave to the New York Post about the hiring of new head coach Kyle Shanahan. Mike Florio is a columnist for ProFootballTalk.com, and has been a close friend of the Florio family since high school. He also is a very close friend to Mike Florio the man. If you are a Bills fan you already know Mike Florio. If not, this story will really make you like him.Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk won’t let personal issues get in the way of San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan.
Florio and Shanahan had been arguing for almost a year, and the exchanges had become increasingly unpleasant at times. However, the NBC Sports analyst is willing to remain neutral and praise the veteran head coach beyond belief.

Do the 49ers have the next Bill Belichick in their ranks? Florio thinks so, and he’s not talking about any of Coach Shanahan’s assistant coaches.
In the episode of 8. In July, on thePFT PMpodcast, Florio made it clear that he thinks Shanahan is capable of following in Belichick’s footsteps – and yes, that includes winning six Super Bowl rings as a head coach at some point.
He is a genius when it comes to football, especially in attack. And if he hadn’t suffered a series of injuries last year, he could have returned to the Super Bowl, he could have returned this year, he could have been in the annual conversation, and he could have had as many rings as Belichick.
Florio is right about Shanahan’s offensive abilities. With the Falcons, he breathed new life into Matt Ryan’s career and made him the 2016 NFL MVP. 49ers star George Kittle, a fifth-round pick in 2017, might be the best tight end in the league. Shanahan was also a mentor to Kirk Cousins and helped him become a skilled NFL quarterback during his time in Washington.
Florio’s praise for Shanahan is particularly interesting given last year’s ongoing problems.
In the summer of 2020, Florio suggested that Shanahan had unrealistic expectations for the upcoming season. Shanahan believed, correctly, that the 49ers would make it to their second consecutive Super Bowl. When he appeared on the Chris Simms Unbuttoned podcast last July, Shanahan joked that he refrained from talking to Simms because Florio might use his words against him.
They resumed their correspondence at the beginning of this year. Before the 2021 NFL Draft, Shanahan made some strange comments about Garoppolo’s future in San Francisco and whether he will be on the roster after the draft.
I can’t guarantee anyone will be alive on Sunday, so I can’t guarantee who will be in the lineup on Sunday. So this concerns us all.
PFT writer Josh Alper published an article about these statements under the title: Kyle Shanahan: There is no guarantee that Jimmy Garoppolo will be alive or in the lineup on Sunday. After Shanahan apologized for the comments, he lashed out at Florio during a discussion of the quarterback battle between Garoppolo and Trey Lance, the third-round pick, onThe Michael Irvin Podcastin May.
There’s an opportunity like that at every position … so it’s definitely there [for] Trey, Shanahan said. I’m not trying to give Florio some kind of title to make an angry statement, but damn.
Florio replied: First: Trey Lance has until Sunday to live.
Florio has been in the NFL long enough to not make over-the-top comparisons lightly. His praise for Shanahan is justified, even after the 49ers’ third losing season in four years as coach.
But for Shanahan to reach those goals in the near future, his team needs to stay healthy. Injuries have plagued the 49ers for most of his career, and Garoppolo started just six games in 2020. Don’t let the 49ers’ elimination from the Super Bowl after the 2019 season distract you from the fact that Garoppolo missed 23 of 32 possible starts in 2018 and 2020.
Injuries and a recent Super Bowl appearance play to some extent in Shanahan’s favor. However, if the 49ers are healthier and still finish the season with a loss, his job security will suffer greatly for the 2022 season – and that’s even if management keeps him.
However, Belichick went broke after his first job as head coach with the Cleveland Browns in the 1990s. If Shanahan doesn’t go to the 49ers, can he still prove Belichick right by going to another team – the Chicago Bears, for example? – In a perennial Super Bowl contender.
