Matt Ryan Should Be Elated About Indy’s Newest Offseason Addition

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed a former Atlanta Falcons quarterback, and Matt Ryan is the first player to make a significant move following the Super Bowl. Experts say that this is good news for both sides who will be familiar with each other’s schemes on offense.

Matt Ryan, the quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, is a 34-year-old veteran of the NFL. He is currently in his 13th year as an NFL player. The Indianapolis Colts recently signed him to a three-year contract extension worth $27 million. This should make him extremely happy about the team’s newest offseason addition. Over the previous several weeks, the Indianapolis Colts have been busy surrounding newly acquired quarterback Matt Ryan with quality. In the second and third rounds of this year’s NFL Draft, they selected wide receiver Alec Pierce and tight end Jelani Woods, respectively, before picking offensive tackle Bernhard Raimann in the third round.

However, Ryan should be considerably more at ease moving into the 2022 season thanks to their most recent offseason acquisition.

The Indianapolis Colts have signed veteran tackle Dennis Kelly, bolstering their offensive line depth and ensuring that 2016 NFL MVP Andrew Luck stays on the field as much as possible.

Dennis Kelly has signed with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Colts announced on May 10 that they are signing offensive tackle Dennis Kelly.

Kelly was a member of the Titans for five seasons, starting 32 games and appearing in 74 others. Last season, he played in 10 games for the Green Bay Packers, starting four of them. After being drafted in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Purdue graduate started his career with the Philadelphia Eagles. Over the course of three seasons, he appeared in 30 games.

This may seem to be a little change, but it will tremendously benefit the Colts.

Matt Ryan ought to be overjoyed.

Indy has already lost important members of its offensive line for 2021. Mark Glowinski has joined the New York Giants in place of Eric Fisher. Of course, three-time All-Pro Quenton Nelson, Braden Smith, and three-time Pro Bowler Ryan Kelly are still on the roster, but there are a handful of holes up front.

Smith is a great right tackle, but Fisher’s departure forced Indianapolis to move Matt Pryor to left tackle. Last season, Pryor showed potential by not surrendering a sack in 438 plays. He also had a PFF score of 76.5. Prior to the Dennis Kelly signing, the TCU product had just two rookies behind him in Raimann and undrafted free agent Ryan Van Denmark.

The Colts were forced to play a game without several offensive line starters last season. If they had started the 2022 season with only Pryor, Smith, and a few of rookies, they would have been doomed from the start.

Kelly provides Indy with consistency and will provide some depth to keep Matt Ryan on his feet. In three of the previous four seasons, he has had a PFF grade of 70 or above, including a 70.4 with the Packers in 2021. Last season, the Purdue product just allowed one sack on 305 plays.

The offensive line for the Indianapolis Colts isn’t ideal. With Pryor at left tackle and third-year man Danny Pinter perhaps starting at right guard, there are worries. Dennis Kelly, on the other hand, will undoubtedly aid a club trying to make a leap forward in 2022.
