The Boston Celtics tried to stop the unstoppable force in Larry Bird. They were able to get 2 steals, but he still outscored them by 18 points and locked up his 3rd straight MVP award with a dominating performance on March 19th 1983 against rival team the Houston Rockets. The Celtics lost 106-91 in what was one of their worst losses ever under Coach Red Auerbach for this era, who retired at the end of the game.

Larry Bird won his 3rd straight MVP in 1988, and he did it with a dominant performance against the Texas Trifecta. Read more in detail here: larry bird mvps.

Larry Bird Locked Up His 3rd Straight MVP With a Dominant Texas Trifecta

Larry Bird has just won his second MVP award in a row. Isn’t it going to take a lot to persuade folks to vote for him for the third time in a row? During the 1985-86 season, the Boston Celtics great had no option as he led the team to the best record in the NBA and their third title of the decade. Bird was certainly separated from the group on a three-game Texas tour that garnered him his third straight MVP award.

Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics were determined to revenge their 1985 NBA Finals defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Celtics demonstrated that they were outmanned on the bench in the 1985 NBA Finals. The starters for Boston handled the most of the work, while the Lakers had the luxury of having Michael Cooper come in and provide immediate scoring. LA’s bench outscored Boston’s 35-9 in Game 2 of the series, with Cooper contributing 22 points. Only one Celtics reserve, Scott Wedman, scored a point in Game 5.

Boston was swept by the Lakers in six games the next season, and the team did all it could to avoid it the following year.

The Celtics signed veteran big man Bill Walton in the summer to breathe new energy into their bench. In his debut year with the organization, the oft-injured center made a major impact.

Walton appeared in 80 games for the first time in his career, filling in for frontcourt studs Robert Parish and Kevin McHale. In all but two games that season, he played 19.3 minutes off the bench. With 67 regular-season wins, he averaged 7.6 points and 6.8 rebounds to lead the Celtics to the best record in the NBA.

The Celtics returned to the NBA Finals, but this time it wasn’t against the Lakers. The reigning champions were defeated by the Houston Rockets, setting up a repeat of the 1981 Finals between the Celtics and the Rockets.

Larry Bird earned his third consecutive MVP award, which he may have sealed with a three-game run in Texas.

Bird had a sense of humour. He’d make fun of his teammates and trash-talk his opponents. When it came to basketball, on the other hand, he was dead serious. That was clear during the Celtics’ three-game trip to Texas in March 1986.

The Celtics began their journey to Texas with a game against the Dallas Mavericks, and Bird proved he was serious even before the game began.

“We simply didn’t believe we were going to lose,” Bird stated in a film celebrating the Boston Celtics’ 1986 championship season. “At the end of the year, we dropped a few games. I recall being really angry with Kevin and Bill before to the game. They were having a good time in Dallas.

“I was in a bad mood. ‘I don’t need you guys, I’ll win it by myself,’ I stepped out and informed them. I get 50 points, and we lose, but I got my message through.”

In a 116-115 defeat, he had 50 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists.

Bird followed up his Mavs game with a 116-104 win against the Rockets, in which he had 31 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds. In San Antonio, he finished the Texas trip with 33 points and 11 rebounds in 31 minutes, leading the Celtics to a 135-119 victory against the Spurs.

Bird said that statistics were unimportant to him.

The Celtics improved to 52-13 with the victory against the Spurs. It was the second victory in a row for the team, which would go on to win 14 games in a row. In the first half, Bird scored 31 of his 33 points. He missed establishing a team record for most points in a half by one point. He was unconcerned about any of it.

According to United Press International, Bird said, “Records actually don’t matter anything to me.” “I know we put up a lot of points in the first half, but we didn’t really play much defense.” I got off to a strong start tonight by grabbing some easy buckets, which definitely helped.”

Bird had the unpleasant assignment of protecting Mike Mitchell, who hit 12 of 13 shots on the night.

Mitchell noted after the game, “Bird can do anything on the court.” “He has range beyond the 3-point line, which makes it difficult. They are without a doubt the greatest squad we’ve faced all season.”

For the third year in a row, Bird has shown that he is the greatest player in the league.
