Kyrie Irving had a victorious return to Boston by scoring 39 points in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference playoff series against the Boston Celtics, but the Brooklyn Nets star let his emotions get the better of him on many occasions.

With jeers pelting the former Celtic throughout the game, Irving chose to respond by giving the Boston crowd the middle finger not once, but twice on Sunday. He most likely thought it was an innocent gesture, but it cost him $50,000.

In Game 1, Kyrie Irving lost his cool and yelled at the Boston fans.

In Boston, Irving isn’t exactly a darling of the locals. The seven-time All-Star had a tumultuous parting with the Celtics in 2019, and the team’s ardent fan base hasn’t forgiven him yet.

Every time Irving comes to Boston to play his former club, he is greeted with a barrage of boos and obscenities from the fans. On Sunday, when the Nets came to TD Garden for Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series, it was no different.

Irving eventually grew irritated by the throngs of hecklers. He turned to the Boston supporters after draining a disputed jumper late in the third quarter and reacted by giving them the middle finger. He doubled down on a different inbounds play by extending both hands behind his head and flipping a double bird to the fans.

Irving explained what had caused him to lose his cool after the game.

“It’s not every fan,” says the author. “I don’t want to go after every Boston fan, but there’s just so much you can take as a competitor when people start chanting ‘p****’ or ‘b****’ and ‘f*** you’ and all that stuff,” Irving told reporters, according to ESPN. “We’re the ones who are meant to be meek and modest, to approach things in a humble manner.” That’s a joke. It’s the postseason. “This is the situation.”

Irving thought he was only defending himself in unfriendly area, but his actions ended up costing him a lot of money.

Irving’s bank account is minus $50,000 because to his middle finger.

Irving isn’t the first NBA star to face jeers from a hostile crowd. It occurs to superstar players in every playoff game, regardless of the venue. However, most players are able to overcome hardship and use their skills on the court to exact retribution.

Instead, Kyrie went with the double bird strategy, which proved to be costly.

Irving was fined $50,000 by the NBA on Tuesday for “making obscene gestures on the playing floor and directing foul remarks at the spectator bleachers,” according to NBA president of league operations Byron Spruell.

Irving won’t be too concerned about forking up $50k, given that he earned over $35 million in compensation alone this season. The punishment only bolstered Irving’s views about players not being permitted to respond against heckling fans.

It’s uncommon that a single fan is disciplined for yelling at a player or pointing the finger at them, yet it occurs every game. Irving retaliates and loses $50,000. Perhaps he is correct.
