The NBA changed the Eastern Conference this season by adding two new teams. The Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics, who had a combined record of 10-55 last year with 1 win each in their final game, swept four games apiece against Cleveland Cavaliers to reach 9 wins for the first time since 2008.

Kevin Durant Declares Bulls Basketball 'Back' Even After the Nets Crush the Top Team in the East

On Wednesday night’s late NBA action, the Brooklyn Nets faced up against the Chicago Bulls in a battle of Eastern Conference heavyweights. Early on, the battle lived up to its promise. However, after a tense first half, Kevin Durant and the Nets decided enough was enough.

In the third quarter, the Nets thrashed the Bulls en way to a statement victory, reminding Chicagoans that a full-strength Nets group will offer the toughest of obstacles come postseason time. Despite the nature of the win, KD took the time to thank the fans in Chicago and a Bulls team that has surprised many this season.

In a thrashing of the Bulls, Kevin Durant and the Nets went on a 47-10 run.

The Nets and Bulls were tied at 71 points each with less than nine minutes left in the third quarter of Wednesday’s contest. After just over 12 minutes of play, Brooklyn was down 37 points.

Between the third and fourth quarters, the Nets embarked on a remarkable 47-10 run, completely dominating the Bulls. James Harden and Kevin Durant combined for 52 points. Patty Mills, who had been in a shooting slump, came off the bench and scored 21 points. Day’Ron Sharpe scored 20 points in his first start of the season.

For the Nets, it was more than just another win. In Kyrie Irving’s third game back, Brooklyn thrashed the Eastern Conference’s top team at home. Durant and the Nets made sure to remind basketball fans of the team’s talents while also highlighting the Bulls’ defensive issues, which have been plaguing them for weeks.

Could this victory tip the scales in Brooklyn’s favor? We’ll have to wait and see. In any case, Durant acknowledged the excitement in Chicago and even praised the crowd for inspiring the Nets to victory.

The Bulls, according to Durant, are “back.”

Kevin Durant (KD) : “The crowd is forming a protective ring around the squad. You can tell the city is catching on to the fact that Chicago Bulls basketball is back. So coming in here and winning in this manner means a lot to us.”

When it comes to public pronouncements, Kevin Durant usually tries to remain in the center of the pack. Even KD understands that it’s difficult to ignore what’s going on in Chicago this season.

From the 2017-18 season through last season, the Bulls have the fewest victories (102) in the NBA. Former executives John Paxson and Gar Forman, as well as head coaches Fred Hoiberg and Jim Boylen, led Chicago to mediocrity. However, Arturas Karnisovas’ front office has finally kicked the organization into high gear, with Billy Donovan’s hire and astute offseason purchases making a huge impact.

Now, the Bulls find themselves on top of the Eastern Conference, and the Windy City is seeing red again. Durant has noticed. He said as much (h/t K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago) after Wednesday’s game, adding that the energy in the United Center also gave the Nets some much-needed juice.

“The fans are beginning to gather behind the squad. You can tell the city is catching on to the fact that Chicago Bulls basketball is back. So coming in here and winning in this manner means a lot to us.”

The tales around the Bulls are always shifting. DeMar DeRozan has gone from a dubious signing to a potential MVP contender. Zach LaVine’s contribution to the team’s success has finally put an end to the misconception that he’s a player with “empty numbers.”

Despite all of Chicago’s achievements, Durant and the Nets — particularly at full vigor — are a whole mountain that the Bulls may find difficult to climb.

The Nets reaffirm their status as championship contenders.

Durant and the Nets haven’t been playing particularly well of late. On multiple instances, the 2013-14 NBA MVP slammed the squad, indicating a negative attitude.

While the Nets have appeared wobbly in recent weeks, their victory against the Bulls demonstrated why they are still as dangerous as any team in the NBA.

In terms of defensive rating, the Nets are a respectable 10th. With Irving in the fold, they’ll be practically unbeatable on the other end, particularly if Mills can supply scoring off the bench and Brooklyn can reclaim Joe Harris off the bench. Not to mention the possibility of Kyrie being a full-time player in the near future.

More than half of the 2021-22 season is yet to be played. The Bulls, Milwaukee Bucks, and any other club wanting to make it out of the Eastern Conference will have a stiff challenge from Durant and the Nets.
