In the past, athletes have been able to find a way out of their struggles. But for some, it’s hard to keep going and get back up on the horse.

It’s Hard, but It’s Something I Have to Do is a motivational quote that was posted by the professional wrestler Chris Jericho. The quote is about how no matter how hard the situation is it will change.

Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks is undoubtedly aware that he will have to be more crafty in his interactions with officials in the 2021-22 season.

To discourage offensive players from seeking or generating needless contact with defenders, the NBA has adopted new foul-baiting regulations. This may have ramifications for Doncic, who was mentioned in a preseason article outlining the reasons for the rule changes.

Doncic said that establishing a working relationship with the zebras would be difficult. However, he recognizes that it is an area of the game in which he must continue to improve as he pursues the MVP award in 2021-22.

Luka Doncic was named in an offseason report as one of the players most responsible for the new foul-baiting regulations.

The NBA is attempting to reduce the number of offensive players who use non-basketball movements to generate fouls and get to the free throw line.

During a June conference to explore possible foul-baiting rule changes, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski claimed that the NBA has compiled video showing players, including Luka Doncic, making “unnatural” movements as a way of garnering fouls. The suggested modifications were eventually approved by the league, with referees being told to swallow their whistles or issue offensive fouls depending on the severity of offensive players’ transgressions.

Many people, including Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, have praised the rule revisions. However, it’s obvious that players are having trouble adjusting to the new regulations. After putting defenders in the air with up-fakes, Stephen Curry and James Harden were among several who seemed puzzled by non-calls during the preseason.

Stars who like to use a variety of techniques to make contact and go to the line may have to adapt for a while. This may be particularly true for Doncic, who has been known to let his emotions get the better of him while dealing with officials on occasion.

Doncic said that he has to strengthen his connection with NBA officials and gain their trust.

“It’s improved, but it’s just preseason,” Luka Doncic says of dealing with officials in preseason. Now comes the actual thing, so we’ll see how it goes. It’s difficult, but it’s something I must do. It’s an aspect of the game that I need to have a better handle on. And I believe it is improving.

Last season, Luka Doncic’s anger landed him into a lot of problems.

In terms of free-throw attempts, the Mavericks’ star was sixth in the NBA. He received his fair share of phone calls. Luka, on the other hand, was always certain that he deserved more whistles.

According to HoopsHype, Doncic matched with Dwight Howard for the most technical fouls (16) in the NBA last season. In an April game against the Los Angeles Lakers, he received a technical foul for making what would today be considered a non-basketball maneuver.

The Slovenian star was asked earlier this week what he thought of the refereeing situation thus far, as well as his reaction to rule revisions. Doncic expressed optimism about his connection with officials (h/t’s Eddie Sefko), but acknowledged he still has to improve on his self-control as the regular season approaches.

“It’s improving, but it’s still preseason.” Now comes the actual thing, so we’ll see how it goes. It’s difficult, but it’s something I must do. It’s an aspect of the game that I need to have a better handle on. And I believe it is improving.

It’s one thing to play in preseason games. But, as Doncic pointed out, it’s a different story when the games are on the line. Can the 22-year-old show greater maturity and self-control on the court?

Doncic may get his first taste of the new foul-baiting regulations in Dallas’ season opener against the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday night, another club whose star player served as an example of why the NBA felt compelled to make adjustments to the rules.

On Thursday, Doncic and Trae Young will face off.

Luka Doncic and Trae Young are two of the NBA’s most promising young players. They’re as talented and charming as any of the league’s under-25 stars. They have, however, sparked some debate.

Young’s method of going to the line attracted even more attention than Doncic’s, who was involved in offseason talks about foul-baiting. Ice Trae was third in the NBA in free-throw attempts, with 62 more than the next-closest guard on the list (Damian Lillard). Last season, his proclivity for seeking contact and eliciting whistles attracted criticism from the likes of Steve Nash and Tom Thibodeau.

In the future, how will Luka and Trae adjust to the new rules? Basketball fans may find out straight away when the Mavericks and Hawks face off in Atlanta on Thursday night.
