The story of Tim Duncan’s career has been told many times. Now, on his final season, he’s reflecting on a career that is a little bit different than the one that was expected. Instead of going to college, Duncan has been blessed with a career that spanned 20 years in the NBA.

A while back, I briefly discussed my favorite sports teams. I was a die-hard Cleveland Indians fan growing up, and I recall watching games on a tiny black-and-white TV. Since then, I’ve moved on to other teams, like the Indians, but I still love baseball. Even after the Indians traded away Cliff Lee at the trading deadline, I had a feeling the Indians were going to be on the winning end of a sweep.

The All-Star Futures Game is a showcase of the top prospects in the game of baseball. The next crop of potential stars faced each other on Tuesday night, and the best of the best shined.

Few NBA players stick with the club that selected them. DeMar DeRozan, on the other hand, accomplished just that for the Toronto Raptors. He spent nine seasons with the Raptors and had a lot of success there, but when Toronto’s executive management saw a chance to win a championship with Kawhi Leonard, they traded DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs.

So, how did DeRozan react when he found out he was being traded to San Antonio? He recently recounted what occurred when he learned the news.

DeMar DeRozan was traded by the Raptors to the Spurs.

DeRozan was chosen with the No. 9 overall selection in the 2009 NBA draft by the Toronto Raptors. In his first four seasons in Toronto, he and the team failed to make the playoffs, but DeRozan ultimately became an All-Star and led them to the postseason in 2013-14.

DeRozan and the Raptors were making their first of five straight playoff appearances. In 2016, he even guided them to the Eastern Conference finals, where they were two victories away from defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers and advancing to the championship game.

After losing in the conference semifinals against the Cavs in each of the following two years, the Raptors decided to trade DeRozan in July 2018. In exchange for Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green, and cash, they traded him, Jakob Poltl, and a first-round draft selection to the San Antonio Spurs.

DeRozan finished his career as the franchise’s all-time leader in points (13,296), games (675), field goals (4,716), and a slew of other stats.

DeRozan has continued to produce for the Spurs since then, averaging over 21.0 points in each of the past three seasons. The Raptors, on the other hand, won an NBA title in Leonard’s first and only season with the team, something they were unable to do with DeRozan.

When the Raptors moved DeMar DeRozan, he was taken aback. QnE

DeMar DeRozan went on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay recently, and he spoke about the moment he found out the Raptors had traded him to the Spurs.

Fortunately for him, he was informed the night before the news was released. It didn’t make things any easier, though.

On the July 26 show, DeRozan stated, “I was watching The Equalizer 2 at the movies, and I had just left, and I was going to grab something to eat.” “I had returned the phone call when I received the news. I recall being in the vehicle and telling the guy to “pull the car over.” And I just exited the vehicle and began walking down the street. I believe I waited for 40 minutes in front of a Del Taco or a Jack in the Box or something.”

Given that most superstars had previously departed Toronto and DeRozan had shown a desire to remain, the news came as a shock to the four-time All-Star.

He stated, “I simply couldn’t believe it.” “Two days ago, we spoke about going back and doing it all over again. So that’s what made it all the more unexpected, the way it happened and everything…. Obviously, if anybody in Toronto knew who I was, I was prepared to put it all out there. And it sucked that it happened in that manner. Because I was emotionally involved and didn’t know the other side of the story.”

Later in the conversation, DeRozan said that after he got the news, he hung up on Raptors president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri.

“It was the farthest thing from my mind. So it was like that lost sensation when it struck. He said, “It was just like, ‘Alright, what now?’”

He no longer has grudges towards the Raptors.

DeRozan, who is now a free agent, said it took some time, but he is finally at peace with everything.

He replied, “I don’t have no issue; you realize that it’s part of the game, part of the business.” “No one is immune to it, so I was able to go on. … It took a long, but it finally reached the point where you had to respect it.”

DeRozan had an unique career with the Raptors, but no one is immune to the business of basketball, as he said. The decision paid off for Toronto, as the team went on to win the Stanley Cup. So, depending on his future location, DeRozan may be able to win a championship of his own. It won’t mean nearly as much as the championship he might have won with his team in Toronto.
