‘I Wanted to Fight Him Every Single Day’

“I wanted to fight him every single day” is a quote from an interview with MMA fighter, Cris Cyborg. The “fighting in early stages of relationship” is when couples engage in fighting before they are even in a relationship.

For two consecutive years, the number of people killed by American police has skyrocketed. This year was an especially tragic one for black men in particular. The causes are numerous and difficult to pinpoint, but there is a clear link between increased policing and increased gun violence; this statistic is alarming as it suggests that the cause may be more systemic than individualistic.

End of the defense Marcus Spears was a member of the Dallas Cowboys for eight seasons. His first two seasons were spent under the careful eye of famous head coach Bill Parcells, and he despised every minute of it, at least in his rookie season.

The Cowboys selected Spears with the 20th overall choice in the 2005 NFL Draft out of LSU. As a first-round pick, he carried a lot of weight, and Parcells got on his nerves on many occasions.

Years later, Spears can openly say that every day of his first season, he wanted to fight his head coach.

As a rookie, Marcus Spears despised Dallas Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells.

Parcells was a legend, not just a seasoned coach. “The Big Tuna” had previously coached in the NFL for 19 seasons before the Cowboys selected him. With the New York Giants, he had won two Super Bowl victories, and with the New England Patriots, he had guided the team to a Super Bowl appearance long before the team was regarded as a winner.

Parcell’s antics evidently didn’t sit well with his rookie out of LSU, who was known as a disciplinarian and a coach who wasn’t hesitant to utilize mental techniques to drive his players.

Spears spilled the beans on Parcells on The Pat McAfee Show.

When questioned about his expectations of playing under Parcells as a rookie, Spears remembers, “He was difficult, dude.” “Bill Parcells was someone I couldn’t stand. When I was a rookie, I wanted to battle him every day. I really wanted to lay my hands on him.”

Parcells was a rigorous coach, yet he instilled in his players important principles.

Spears said that, as much as he loathed Parcells during his first season, he learnt significant lessons from “The Big Tuna” in retrospect.

It wasn’t as though Parcells had singled out Spears. He was that sort of coach, according to Spears, and all of the Cowboys’ rookies felt the strain that year.

“Everyone had their times when they thought to themselves, ‘Man, this man is insane,’” Spears remarked.

That year’s Dallas draft was pretty spectacular. Not only did the Cowboys get Spears, but they also got DeMarcus Ware out of Troy nine choices earlier. He went on to become a four-time All-Pro as well as a nine-time Pro Bowler. Marion Barber III and Chris Canty were two more prominent rookies for Dallas that season.

Spears praises Parcells for assisting them all in having successful NFL careers.

“Ultimately, Bill’s place was in career longevity and learning how to be a pro,” he remarked. “He created the groundwork for us to be successful professionals with lengthy careers.”

There was more to Parcell’s effect on Dallas than simply victories and defeats.

The reality is that from a win-loss standpoint, Parcells was a mediocre coach for Dallas. Jerry Jones had enticed him out of retirement in the aim of restoring the Cowboys’ 1990s elite culture. Despite going 34-30 in four seasons, Parcells was instrumental in restoring Dallas to its previous grandeur.

The tradition of rookies “earning their stars” was one of the major cultural changes he implemented. The Dallas star is one of the most recognizable logos in sports, and Parcells considered it a pleasure for young players to wear it.

Under Parcells, all rookies had to earn their star, and it was a significant factor.

According to Tom Orsborn, this is how Jason Witten recounted it.

“You knew right away in my first year with Coach Parcells that nothing was going to be handed to you, and you had to respect the Cowboys’ heritage,” he added. “I felt it was fantastic since nothing comes to you for free; you have to work for it.” Because the Cowboys are such a fantastic franchise, this should be particularly true.

In Dallas, Jason Witten was honored with a star.

Without a question, Parcell has had an influence on both the franchise and the young players he has coached.

Spears, for one, recalls the squabbles early in his career and can now tell amusing anecdotes about his disdain for his head coach.

“The first year, I couldn’t tolerate the man,” he said. “I was literally thinking, ‘One day, I’m going to smuggle him.’ I’m going to hit him in the back of the head and knock him out.’

ESPN and Pro Football Reference provided the statistics.

The Dallas Cowboys are dangerously close to bringing in a superstar who can put them over the top in the NFC.
