Hot Wheels Unleashed Preview: Putting The Flame In The Game

Hot Wheels has been around for decades, but few people have ever played with them. The 1982 “Adventure Pack” is a great intro to the game, but it’s simplicity is what makes it a classic. Sure, you can add cars and tracks to it and play with the action figures, but you can’t really customize them. The 1980s and 90s were Hot Wheels’ heyday, and the series has only gotten better since then. The 2017 “Adventure Pack” is even better, and we are excited to unveil it to you in this preview.

HotWheels have been around since 1968, and for the last 50 years, fans of the little plastic cars have been clamoring for new ways to play with them. Over the years, the games have changed, but the cars have stayed the same. Even though the Hot Wheels brand is now owned by Mattel, the original designs are still faithfully produced by the original toy company.

After months of anticipation, the line of Hot Wheels race cars is finally here! The Build-A-Hot-Wheels line is the latest toy craze that has invaded all aspects of pop culture. From “One Direction” to “real” racing, Hot Wheels has become a worldwide phenomenon.

Hot Wheels is one of the most recognizable and well-known toy brands in the world, givingHot Wheels Unleashed a tough legacy to live up to. Expectations for a Hot Wheels game from Milestone are even higher, as the studio is almost exclusively in the racing business.

Hot Wheels Unleasheddoesn’t launch for several months, but after playing a few game modes for a week, I have a feeling that both old and new Hot Wheels fans will find something to enjoy inUnleashed, even if the game lacks some of the childlike imagination that toy fans around the world evoke.

At first I was worried that theHot Wheels Unleashed would be too mature. Milestone makes some excellent racing simulations, but historically Hot Wheels games have always stayed closer to karting, and rightly so.

I must admit that at first I was put off by the impressive visuals. These games have never looked better than they do now, even in the context of when they came out. This game seems to have the biggest budget of all the Hot Wheels games so far.

So far the money seems to have been well spent. During my play time, I had time to play Fast Races, where I could choose from nearly 30 original or fancy Hot Wheels cars.

Nostalgic or flaming fans will recognize many big and new favorites like Twin Mill, Rip Rod, Roller Toaster and Exotic. Like most Hot Wheels games,Unleashed does not appear to contain any licensed cars. Instead, it’s about using Mattel’s own designs.

Each car has its own statistics, which are clearly visible when you select it. This makes the game more similar to other card games and gives young or inexperienced players the chance to quickly choose their future favorites. The game even divides these cars into different levels: normal, rare, legendary and super treasure hunt car.

The last group is based on real life and is generally what collectors dream about, although I didn’t get to that in the draft. It looks like players will also be able to upgrade their vehicles in the full version of the game, both in terms of appearance and functionality.

The cars have also been reproduced with great precision. The close-up choice screen of the model shows exceptional attention to detail. The plastic windows reflect as they should. Each color is incredibly realistic. I looked closely at each toy car and compared them to the 600+ cars my son has in his room. So every detail, big or small, is present inUnleashed , and it’s a pleasure to watch.

These details are nice for the fans, but they mean nothing if the racing itself is mediocre. But it’s also an important step. It seems the team is ready to create a racing model that is easy for younger players, while having a skill ceiling (and the possibility of brutal AI) for more experienced racers.

The AI on medium difficulty was already bothering me, although I was warned that the difficulty wasn’t properly balanced yet, so I expect that will be remedied by the time the game comes out.

The songs themselves are probably the most exciting part. Divided into several difficulty levels, even the easy tracks offer the high-speed jokes fans love, with elements such as the turbocharger flashing and reading the turbo constantly pushing the speedometer to the limit. The best tracks are those in the higher levels, where fantastic elements like spiders throwing cobwebs at the player and looping track sections capture the spirit of Hot Wheels almost perfectly.

But it is in the atmosphere that this element is missing.

Although the tracks are necessarily much wider than their real-life counterparts, they are still depicted on worlds much larger than the cars, to convey the scale of the toy. But these frat houses and skate parks seem rather lifeless as a marginal landscape. The soundtrack doesn’t help either: Sterile, preset rock music plays as you move through each track.

Hot Wheels has managed to constantly reinvent itself in the real world, with new toy lines like Hot Wheels AI, tons of licensed crossovers like Rocket League, always holding the course between modernity and timelessness. For example, I was blown away by the music choice inUnleashed, which sounds like it came from a commercial I saw as a kid 20 years ago. Adding more life to the world beyond the tracks themselves will help build loyalty among Hot Wheels.

The full version of the game offers players a career mode with boss races, local and network multiplayer with up to 12 racers and, most importantly, the use of the track editor to create your own races. There’s nothing more important in the game than that, given the brand. So far I have high hopes for this arcade racer, but I will have to get my hands on the game before I can make a final judgement on it.

Hot Wheels Unleashed will be released on the 30th. September on Xbox, PlayStation, PC and Switch.
