‘He Has That ‘It’ Factor’

Finding a good pitcher to put in the starting rotation is a very difficult task. Not only do you need a good pitcher to go with the best offense, but you also need to balance the ballplayers budget. Finding a good pitcher to put in the starting rotation is one of the most important things for a team to do.

If you’ve been a football fan for any length of time, you likely have heard the term “it” thrown around quite a bit. The term is a catchall term for someone who is able to make their teammates better through physical and mental leadership. It’s the kind of influence that can lead to great success for a team, but watching a good “it” player lead others to victory can be a thrilling experience, and it can be difficult for an average or below-average player to understand how certain players can make others better.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to take away from the game of football, I just like to laugh at it. It’s not a very serious business, especially when compared to baseball or soccer or basketball, so I think it’s important we at least try and poke some fun at it. Cade Cunningham of Oklahoma State, Evan Mobley of USC, Jalen Green of the G League Ignite, and Jalen Suggs of Gonzaga are anticipated to be the first four selections in some order.

For the 2021 NBA Draft, mock drafts have been revised, and big boards have been completed.

The Detroit Pistons are generally anticipated to choose Cunningham first overall. In today’s league, clubs seek for a mix of size, scoring, and playmaking skills in one-and-done prospects. Mobley is considered the No. 2 prospect in certain quarters.

Green, although being included in the discussion for the first overall selection, is unlikely to be chosen by Detroit. However, passing on Green would be a mistake given his agility, ability to create his own shot, and tremendous potential.

Jalen Green has all of the qualities that clubs want in the No. 1 selection in the NBA Draft.

Green’s athleticism is unmatched, as he demonstrated last season as a member of the G League’s Ignite squad. He took use of his speed to go past — and sometimes even over — opposing opponents. For a 19-year-old, he combines his athleticism with a high degree of offensive ability.

Green, maybe more significantly, seems to have an insatiable desire to improve. Jarrett Jack, a long-time NBA veteran and Ignite teammate, praised Green for seeking him out first and being a “sponge” in terms of taking up as much information as he could on The Ryen Russillo Podcast on The Ringer.

Green’s Ignite head coach Brian Shaw likened his work ethic and “it” factor to that of an NBA great in an interview with Chad Ford’s NBA Big Board:

His work ethic — I was around Kobe when he was younger, and I was around other really talented young players like Paul George when I was in Indiana — and there’s just a certain ‘It’ element that those guys had when they were Jalen’s age, and he has it. When you combine that with the fact that he’s willing to put in the effort, he’s got that work ethic. He wants to be the greatest, so he competes every day in practice, in every drill, just to avoid losing a sprint to a shooting contest.

In a league full of pros, Green looked like the best player on the court most of the time.

Green led his club in scoring with 17.9 points per game, according to NBA.com’s G League data. On 5.7 attempts per game, he shot 46.1 percent from the field and 36.5 percent from three. For anybody who took more than one three per game, his shooting % from deep was the best on the squad.

He also averaged 4.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists while shooting 82.9 percent from the free-throw line. He also showed potential on defense, recording 1.5 thefts per game. As a 19-year-old, he stood out among NBA veterans and players vying for a roster place.

Green may wind up being the top player in the 2021 draft, despite taking longer to develop.

Green’s greatest flaw is his lack of size. On the Ignite’s official roster, he was listed as 6-foot-6 and 178 pounds. Green’s lack of strength, despite his speed, may be a problem when he adapts to NBA defense.

Green has also been the top scorer in every game he’s played. Wherever he is selected, he will have to learn how to play in an NBA offense and improve his playmaking abilities.

But those are two things Green can work on if he joins the league. He won’t reach his physical peak for another 5-6 years, but there’s no reason to believe he won’t pick up on the offensive and defensive subtleties of the NBA game. Green has a greater chance of growing into a superstar than any other talent in this year’s draft because of the potential of a 19-year-old hard-working, extremely athletic shot-creator in today’s game.

When you think of the types of athletes who have that “it” factor, you may automatically think of a talented young baseball player or football player. But, sometimes the “it” factor occurs with older athletes as well. One example of this is golfer Phil Mickelson, who is now 43 years old and still competing at the highest levels of the sport. He has won 20 PGA Tour titles and is well on his way to another 20, even though he has only played professionally in the last 10 years..
