Has Tiger Woods Ever Won an Open Championship at St. Andrews?

Tiger Woods has won 14 Major Championships, and the Open Championship in St. Andrews is one of them. It’s a tournament Tiger Woods has won four times-in his first win at age 21; while it was not officially an Open Championship due to scheduling reasons, he did so before they were unified with other titles running concurrently among different games (e.g., there was also an LPGA event on that same week); as well as during his final year as professional golfer when he would have otherwise been ineligible for the following season Masters Tournament due to age limits.

Tiger Woods has never won the British Open. He did win an Open Championship at St. Andrews, but it was in 1997 and he was just a teenager.

You must win The Open at St. Andrews if you want to be a player that people remember.

Jack Nicklaus, a smart guy, once remarked that. You may be familiar with him.

At the “home of golf,” Nicklaus won the Open Championship twice: in 1970 and 1978. Legendary golfers Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Nick Faldo, and Seve Ballesteros are among those who have triumphed at the Old Course.

What about Tiger Woods, though?

Tiger Woods has never triumphed at St. Andrews.

Tiger Woods tees off during the 134th Open Championship. Tiger Woods begins play on the 18th hole at the Old Course, St. Andrews Golf Links, during the third round of the 134th Open Championship.

Only his third major start in his career, Woods made his St. Andrews debut as an amateur in the 1995 Open Championship. The Stanford student at the time, who was just 19 years old, finished in a tie for 68th place at 7 over par, one shot ahead of Nicklaus.

It seems that Woods just need four visits around the Old Course to figure out St. Andrews. He came back as a pro in 2000, when he established a new record at the Open Championship, shooting -19 to win by eight strokes. He played four consecutive rounds in the 60s and spent the whole week avoiding all 112 bunkers on the Old Course. The second part of his historic Tiger Slam was the source of Woods’ first victory at St. Andrews.

He wasn’t done, however.

Five years later, Woods came back to St. Andrews and won the Open Championship there for a second time in a row, this time by a margin of five strokes and with a final score of 14-under par. He attempted the three-peat in 2010, but he came up well short and tied for 23rd place. After rounds of 76 and 75 in his last Open Championship appearance at St. Andrews in 2015, he failed to make the cut.

Similar to Nicklaus, Woods has won the Open Championship twice at St. Andrews, and a third victory there in 2022 would make living legend history.

At the 2022 British Open, Tiger Woods has a chance to create history.

No golfer has ever won three Open Championships at St. Andrews, although five players—Bob Martin, J.H. Taylor, James Braid, Nicklaus, and Woods—have each won two of the tournaments.

This year, Woods has the opportunity to alter that, and it could be his last.

He remarked this past week, “I don’t know how many Open Championships I have left here at St. Andrews, but I wanted this one. “It began for me here in 1995. If it does, it does so in 22. In such case, it doesn’t. There is no certainty, but it would be amazing if I could play one more.
