Gerald McCoy is one of the most dominant defensive tackles in the NFL. But his first season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was a disaster, as he missed 13 games and only played in three others because of injuries.

Gerald McCoy’s 1st Knee Injury Came With a Lot of Dark Days; Now the Raiders Defensive Tackle Is Out for the Season Again

Being an NFL player isn’t easy. Football players may enjoy fame and riches, but it is also one of the most hazardous professional sports. Football, due to its physical nature, produces more severe injuries than other sports, and season-ending injuries are not unusual among NFL players. Gerald McCoy experienced this in Week 1. And it’s a huge setback for the Raiders defensive lineman, who had fought hard to return to the field following his previous serious injury.

After his initial knee injury, Gerald McCoy had “dark days.”

The Players’ Tribune released a piece written by McCoy regarding the injury that forced him to miss the whole 2020 season with the Dallas Cowboys on September 13, the day of his Week 1 game.

“Boom. The tendon in my quad just pops,” McCoy remembers during a routine exercise on the first day of pads practice. He claims he felt like he had banged knees with his buddy, but they didn’t really contact. When he attempted to rise, he says he was in “severe agony” and “realized something wasn’t right.”

It was his first time missing a complete football season, and the injury “brought a lot of sad days.” McCoy questioned if it was worth it to rehab and attempt to return to the game. However, the 33-year-old soldiered on, determined to recover and do whatever it needed to return to the NFL.

He says, “The battle simply to get back was the fight that meant the most to me.” It was a wise decision.

McCoy was released by the Cowboys shortly after his operation, although he later signed with the Raiders. McCoy thinks he was destined to be a part of the squad.

“I have a new mission. I can definitely understand why God placed me on this team.” It’s been “very gratifying” to be able to make an influence on the younger guys in the locker room.

McCoy had no idea that the day his essay was published, he would suffer another season-ending injury.

McCoy’s injury against the Ravens ended his season.

McCoy fell down on a 49-yard throw from Lamar Jackson to Sammy Watkins in the Raiders’ Week 1 game against the Baltimore Ravens this past September 13 after playing nine defensive plays. McCoy had to be taken off the field in a wheelchair. According to ESPN, there were less than seven minutes left in the fourth quarter of the game, which the Raiders won in overtime.

Head coach Jon Gruden told reporters the following day that he believed it would be a “long-term” injury. That was verified a day later when McCoy was put on injured reserve after suffering a season-ending ruptured ACL in his left knee.

What do the Raiders’ chances look like for the remainder of the season?

Losing a seasoned presence on defense like Gerald McCoy is a setback for the Raiders’ postseason aspirations this season. They are, however, 2-0 following victories against the Ravens and Steelers. The Dolphins will be without starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for their next game, which will be played at home on Sunday. The Raiders now have the upper hand.

According to Pro Football Reference, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr leads the league with 817 passing yards after two games, igniting an offense that must depend on its passing game since the team’s rushing game has failed to produce.

TE With 15 catches, Darren Waller leads the Raiders in receptions, but he has 26 targets and has to improve his relationship with Carr in order to connect on a higher proportion of throws.

They’ll have a bit of a buffer if they can start 3-0, as they aim to reach the playoffs for the first time since the 2016 season.
