In 2020 and 2021, Collin Sexton led the Cleveland Cavaliers in scoring for the second year in a row. Following LeBron James’ second departure in the summer of 2018, the same offseason Cleveland selected the rookie guard, he was one of the Cavs’ lone bright lights.

However, with Sexton limited to just 11 games in 2021-22 due to a knee injury, Darius Garland emerged as the team’s genuine standout. Garland was named to the All-Star team and led the Cavaliers to their first winning season since 1997-98. So, after becoming one of the NBA’s best point guards while Sexton was out, how does Garland feel about his teammate’s future with the team?

Garland reportedly stated his intentions for the Cavs this summer.

Collin Sexton and Darius Garland have been teammates for three seasons. In 2018, the Cavs took Sexton eighth overall, and Garland fifth in 2019.

In his debut season, the latter averaged just 12.3 points and 3.9 assists, while Sexton scored 20.8. In 2020-21, Garland averaged 17.4 points and 6.1 assists per game, while Sexton had a career-high 24.3 points and 4.4 assists. Each of those two seasons, Cleveland had a losing record.

Sexton, on the other hand, sustained a knee injury in their third year together. Garland, on the other hand, led the Cavs to a 44-38 record by averaging 21.7 points and 8.6 assists per game.

Is it possible that the team won due of Sexton’s absence? It’s difficult to say. Jarrett Allen, who was named to his first All-Promising team this year, and star rookie Evan Mobley were on the team. There were several variables that contributed to the Cavaliers’ success.

And it looks like Garland feels that having a healthy Sexton on the court would only make them more dangerous. Next season, the Vanderbilt product seems to want his backcourt running partner to wear the burgundy and gold.

After failing to agree to a new contract last offseason, Sexton will shortly be a restricted free agent. He will allegedly want “starting guard money,” which is at least $20 million per year, according to Cleveland.com.

When questioned about the Cavaliers re-signing his teammate, Garland, who is on a vacation to Turks and Caicos with Sexton, answered, “That’s out of my hands,” according to Cleveland.com. “However, I really hope so.”

How will Collin Sexton fit with this new Cavs lineup?

When Collin Sexton went down, the Cavaliers were a completely different team. Following a trade with the Indiana Pacers before the trade deadline, they now have Caris LeVert in the backcourt.

So, where does Sexton fall within this group?

He’d assist in the improvement of one of the company’s most apparent flaws. The Cavs didn’t have much backcourt scoring outside of Darius Garland (and Caris LeVert at the end of the season). Sexton, who has averaged 20.0 points per game in his career, can provide them with exactly that.

However, if he returns, he will have to play the two-guard position.

Throughout his career, Sexton has played point guard and shooting guard, but he’s more of a pure scorer than a facilitator. When he’s on the field, the offense isn’t as fluid as when Garland is. He’d have to play more off the ball and as part of the attack rather than leading it.

So, will Sexton’s contract be extended by the Cavaliers? They seem to want to, but it will all come down to financial considerations. Last summer, they signed Jarrett Allen to a $100 million contract, and they’ll need to extend Garland shortly before signing Mobley in a few years.

With a healthy Sexton joining this year’s club, they might have a spectacular season in 2022-23. The Cavs, on the other hand, have won without him and will continue to do so if they do not reach an agreement on a new deal in the coming months.
