I don’t know if there is any sports writer out there more controversial than the Green Bay Packers’ Brian Gutekunst, but I’m up for the challenge. It’s not every day that an NFL GM, especially one with little-to-no NFL experience, makes a bold announcement during a Hall of Fame induction ceremony and then backs it up with a trade, but that’s exactly what Gutekunst did this week when he traded star wide receiver and one of the best kick returners in the NFL, Davante Adams, to the Philadelphia Eagles for a 3rd round pick, cornerback, and a 6th round pick.

Last week, news broke that the Packers were working with their new head coach on a new deal with their 2013 first round pick, wide receiver Davante Adams. In the last few seasons, the Packers have been unable to get a new contract signed with Adams, and he has been put on the trade block. The trade rumors have been fierce, but the Packers have never budged on the asking price.

Recent weeks have brought increasing headlines about the well-being of contract negotiations between Green Bay Packers quarterback and former first round draft pick Aaron Rodgers and the team’s current wide receiver, Davante Adams. One day, it seemed as though the two sides were on the verge of coming to an agreement on a new deal. But now, it appears that negotiations have hit a snag.

The dismal offseason of Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst resumed this weekend as he reviewed the state of contract talks with standout wide receiver Davante Adams.

Adams is nearing the end of his current contract and is looking for a large payday. However, Gutekunst’s most recent comments hint that the talks are far from over.

Davante Adams aspires to be the NFL’s highest-paid wide receiver.

When asked if Aaron Rodgers’ comeback has influenced Davante Adams’ willingness to take a contract that does not make him the NFL’s highest-paid receiver, Adams responds, “That’s not going to happen.” He claims he isn’t a baby, that he has money, and that he will turn up, but not for less than he is worth.

In recent seasons, Davante Adams has performed like one of the top wide receivers in the NFL. He expects to be compensated appropriately.

Throughout Packers camp, the 28-year-old has made it obvious that he wants his next deal to reflect the value he brings to the team on the field. That worth, in Adams’ opinion, is unrivaled. He claimed last month that he has earned the title of NFL’s highest-paid receiver. It’s difficult to refute the assertion.

In the last few seasons, Adams’ numbers have been nothing short of outstanding. He had a particularly productive year in 2020, leading the NFL with 18 touchdown receptions and 115 grabs for 1,374 yards. His catch rate of 77.2 percent was by far the best of his career.

The sophisticated statistics back up Adams’ claim to be the top wideout in the league. According to Pro Football Focus, his 92.2 receiving grade lead all receivers last season.

The Packers, on the other hand, have shown a reluctance to offer Adams that much money. The team will continue to negotiate with the All-Pro during the season, according to Gutekunst, but nothing looks to be close to being finalized.

According to Brian Gutekunst, the Packers will not set a timeline for extending Adams’ contract.

On one side, Gutekunst’s willingness to negotiate during the 2021 season appears to be a positive omen.

When questioned about Adams’ contract status, Gutekunst told USA TODAY, “We’re always open to the conversations, we don’t shut things down for the season.” “I’m aware that some teams have done so in the past. That is not how Russ and I would handle things. We’re willing to work through the season to get things done, just like David [Bakhtiari] last year.”

Gutekunst had already demonstrated his ability to negotiate large contracts. Left tackle David Bakhtiari and running back Aaron Jones were two examples. He also appears to be committed to ironing out the wrinkles with Adam.

“This is going to take a long time. This is another another large contract with a top athlete. According to USA TODAY, Gutekunst stated, “It will take some time.”

The problem is that the Packers may not have the time to waste or partake in such an exercise. Because of Aaron Rodgers’ uncertain future with the team, they should act sooner rather than later. Gutekunst does not appear to be eager to do so.

Not to mention the fact that players frequently postpone conversations until after the season is over. What happens if Davante Adams refuses to sign a new deal during the regular season? Green Bay should be motivated to move quickly just by that thought.

By 2022, Green Bay could be in for a harsh shock.

The Packers’ lack of urgency in dealing with Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams’ individual situations is concerning. Those are two franchise players who have publicly expressed their displeasure with the organization.

Some Packers fans may point out that the team reached an agreement with Rodgers. What makes you think Gutekunst won’t do the same with Adams?

For one thing, Adams has stated that Rodgers’ recent contract extension with the organization has no bearing on his desire to be the highest-paid receiver in the NFL. Furthermore, the new pact with Rodgers appears to be a one-time transaction.

Fans of the Green Bay Packers should expect a lot of changes in 2022. Brian Gutekunst hasn’t been proactive in negotiating a new contract with Adams, which means he and Rodgers could be on different clubs next season.
